DC has found it’s Shazam! And to say it’s a surprise casting choice would be a severe understatement but also one that could turn out to be a stroke of genius.
Zachery Levi, known best to TV fans as Chuck, the nerd-turned-secret-agent, has landed the in-demand part and could start shooting the DC blockbuster as soon as February next year.
The project has been in development for quite some time, with Dwayne Johnson originally attached to star as the movie’s main villain Black Adam, although this appearance looks unlikely due to a re-worked script.
Studio execs had originally been looking at John Cena or Armie Hammer for the title role, but it appears Levi, who recently appeared in the Thor franchise, is the man to take the role forward.
Shazam is a bit of an underrated superhero, yet one who can hold his own against almost any other including the Man of Steel himself – so the part could finally propel Levi into the Hollywood elite if he can pull it off.
The blockbuster, that will explore the origins of this mysterious superhero, is set for release on 5 April 2019.
