Is Suicide Squad 2 heading into production next year?

Warner Bros is determined to keep it’s DC Cinematic Universe moving forward with a host of sequels on the production line, including a follow up to last year’s Suicide Squad blockbuster.

News recently broke that Suicide Squad 2 would be heading into production in Spring 2018 with Joel Kinnaman the only star to have confirmed his return so far.

Earlier in the year it was rumoured that Oscar-winning director Mel Gibson was the frontrunner to take over the franchise from David Ayer, who had left to focus on the upcoming Gotham City Sirens.

However, despite showing interest in the project, Gibson eventually ruled himself out, leading Warner Bros to focus their attention on The Shallows director Jaume Collet-Serra.

Many DC Comics fans will be surprised to learn that a sequel to Suicide Squad is going ahead, especially considering the first film bombed with critics, scoring a very disappointing 25% on Rotten Tomatoes.

After the disaster that was Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Warner Bros had hoped that Suicide Squad would put it’s DC Cinematic Universe back on track, especially considering it boasted a cast including Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto and Cara Delevingne.

Now though it appears the studio has been given new life thanks for the overwhelming success of Wonder Woman, which looks set to hit the billion dollar mark before the end of it’s cinematic run.

If Justice League proves another hit this year for the movie studio, perhaps the rest of the Suicide Squad cast will be convinced to give the franchise one more chance.
