The world of superhero movies has always been predominantly ruled by male heroes, with the likes of Batman, Superman, Iron Man and Spider-Man ruling the big screen for decades.
However the recent success of Wonder Woman at the worldwide box office is paving the way for female-lead superhero movies to rise up and take their place as main contenders on the big screen.
So far Wonder Woman had taken in over $700 million at the box office, easily overtaking Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad as DC Comics most successful big screen release.
But its commercial and critical success is causing a shift in Hollywood that could see female superheroes given more prominence on screen.
Its not just female characters like Supergirl, Black Widow and Batgirl that could benefit from Wonder Woman’s success. Women could now find themselves cast in roles that have only ever been portrayed by male actors – roles such as Ghost Rider and Captain America.
The next couple of years could see the top of the box office ruled by female superheroes when the likes of Batgirl and Captain Marvel finally hit cinema screens.
