We have our Cable, and it’s not Kyle Chandler, Michael Shannon or Stephen Lang – in fact it’s no-one that was even remotely tipped for the part. Instead, producers of the hotly-anticipated sequel have chosen Josh Brolin to go up against Ryan Reynolds in the sequel to 2016’s mammoth box office hit.
It’s definitely a solid choice for the part, there’s no denying that, but perhaps the most interesting aspect of the casting choice is the decision to cast an actor already portraying a Marvel character. Brolin is currently filming Avengers: Infinity War which will see the Oscar-nominated actor portray the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s ultimate villain, Thanos.
Fortunately it’s highly unlikely the two franchises will ever cross paths, so the casting choice could prove to be a sound investment for 20th Century Fox, who own the rights to the Marvel character, as they look to build on the phenomenal financial and critical success of the first instalment.
THR, who first broke the news, are reporting that Brolin has committed himself to at least four appearances as Cable, who’s origins stem from being the son of X-Men character Cyclops – so future appearances in the continuing X-Men franchise could be on the cards.
Deadpool 2, which is being helmed by stuntman-turned-director David Leitch (Atomic Blonde), is due to start filming next month and is slated for release in 2018.
