There’s a rumour making it’s way around the vast cyberspace that is the world wide web stating that Ben Affleck is considering Anna Kendrick for a role as Robin in his upcoming solo Batman film… but how credible is the potential casting?
Well, put simply, it all depends on what kind of franchise Ben Affleck is trying to build.
Most Batman fans will agree that Robin, or Dick Grayson as he’s known without the mask, has never been a popular character in the Dark Knight’s world, and even less so in the movie world – often being blamed for degrading the reputation of Bruce Wayne.
Just take Chris O’Donnell’s portrayal as the character in Joel Schumacher’s disappointing Batman Forever blockbuster, and then the even more abysmal Batman & Robin catastrophe… not exactly been a worthy sidekick for Batman.
So how exactly could Ben Affleck introduce this character into what’s likely to be an even darker and grittier world than that created by Christopher Nolan? The answer… throw the rule book out the window and make the character female.
Last week, shortly after Joe Manganiello announced to us he was joining The Batman as brutal mercenary Deathstroke, the actor posted a picture of himself and Anna Kendrick with the caption “Deathstroke and Robin”.
It could be about to materialize… I mean Anna Kendrick can certainly hold her own as an Oscar-nominee against the likes of Ben Affleck and J.K. Simmons, and with Affleck confirming he’s still working on polishing off the script, Robin could be returning to the franchise.
Of course, this is still just rumours and could simply be a distraction from other casting news, but if anyone can make it work, it would be Batfleck.
