Get ready because Guy Ritchie just signed on to direct a live-action adaptation of Disney’s timeless classic, Aladdin.
With the Jungle Book and Beauty and the Beast already receiving the live-action treatment, it was only a matter of time before Disney Studios targeted Aladdin for the big-budget treatment.
The 1992 family classic was a big player for the studio, receiving two Academy awards and claiming the top spot at the box office that year with a worldwide gross of over $500 million.
It would certainly be a testing project for the Sherlock Holmes director, who recently wrapped production on next year’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword – though it will come with it’s challenges.
Fans of the original animated film will tell you there’s no genie but Robin Williams – the late actor won a Golden Globe for his voice work and to this day remains one of his most popular roles. So for Disney and Ritchie, convincing audiences to embrace a new genie will be one of the biggest challenges, and could see the project either sink or swim when it finally hits cinemas around the world.
Still, Guy Ritchie has proven himself to be a talented and versatile filmmaker – so if any can pull this live action adaptation of Aladdin off, it’s him.
Stay tuned for more info surrounding this ambitious project.
