The Power Rangers could be set to change Hollywood blockbusters for the foreseeable future.
Let’s be honest, Hollywood is running out of blockbuster ideas, resulting in horrific sequels and reboots, sometimes years after the original’s cleaned up at the box office – Independence Day: Resurgence is a prime example.
However, more often than not, this ‘quick buck’ mindset often results in huge losses for studios like this year’s Ben-Hur and Independence Day, which both lost over $100 million after release. But next year’s upcoming Power Rangers release could mark an important corner stone for fresh big-budget blockbusters that don’t make up want to stop the planet and get off.
Though it’s not the first time the 90’s kids TV series has hit the big screen, 2016’s Power Rangers adaptation will mark the first time the franchise has received the ‘big-budget’ treatment… $120 million to be precise.
We all know by now that superhero franchises mean big bucks in Tinseltown, often commanding huge budgets but bringing even bigger box office returns… just look at this year’s Deadpool. So if Power Rangers proves successful next year, Hollywood could find itself presented with a whole host of new potential franchises from the 80’s and 90’s, that could save the rest of us from an abundance of horrific sequels and reboots.
Perhaps not entirely though, considering someone, somewhere thought it would be a good idea to make a Monster Trucks movie adaptation… they might as well have just burnt the money and saved the effort.
