Amazon Greenlights The Departed Adaptation For TV

The battle of the TV streaming services continues as Amazon announces that it’s moving forward with a TV adaptation of Martin Scorsese’s Oscar-winning modern-classic, The Departed.

Recently formed Amazon Studios has acquired the rights to the production, which was rumoured earlier this year – the series will be an adaptation of the 2006 box office release, which itself was an adaptation of the Hong Kong crime-drama Infernal Affairs.

Unlike the film version starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Jack Nicholson, the TV series will be based in Chicago and will see an undercover cop infiltrate a Latino gang, who themselves have already infiltrated the Chicago Police Department.

There’s currently no word on casting options but it’s likely that Amazon will be looking to bulk the show out with big names, considering the star-studded cast that appeared in the movie adaptation.

Martin Scorsese‘s film version won the coveted director his first Oscar, despite previously earning award nominations for classics including Gangs of New York, Goodfellas and The Aviator.

With Amazon Studios also developing a TV series based on Tom Clancy’s ‘Jack Ryan’ novels, starring John Krasinski, there’s no immediate release date confirmed yet, but production will likely be scheduled to begin later this year with a possible 2018 release.
