The ‘reboot’ is perhaps one of the most common products coming out of Hollywood these days and one that shows no signs of slowing down any time soon – but the latest announcement is perhaps the most bizarre to date.
The family classic Splash, originally starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah, is heading for the remake conveyor belt with Channing Tatum attached to star – but get this, the 22 Jump Street star won’t be taking over Hanks role… no instead he’ll be playing the mermaid role that Hannah starred in when Splash originally hit cinema screens back in 1985.
That’s right, Channing Tatum will be playing a mermaid! Or Merman I guess.
The news of the strange remake started to filter through the Hollywood grapevine yesterday after producer Brian Grazer ‘accidentally’ let the cat out of the bag – but you’d have been forgiven for thinking it was a bizarre joke. However, given the recent popularity of Tatum’s viral performance as Frozen’s very own Elsa on Lip Sync Battle, it’s perhaps a genius piece of casting.
It’s not yet known if the Splash remake will follow the same storyline as the original, that saw Hanks’ character reunited with a mysterious mermaid who saved his life as a young boy, but it’s likely that their premises will be very similar.
As for who’ll direct the remake of Ron Howard‘s 80’s classic is still anyone’s guess, but Disney has pushed the project through to the pre-production phase, with Channing Tatum’s 22 Jump Street co-star Jillian Bell also signing on to star alongside.
Splash will likely hit cinemas sometime during summer 2018.
