Not so long back, British Dame and Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren mentioned that she’s love to join the cast of the upcoming eigth installment of the Fast & Furious franchise – though most just saw it as a fleeting remark with little true intention.
But alas, with franchise star Vin Diesel responding excitedly via Instagram to Mirren’s remark, the actress has now officially joined the star-studded cast of Fast 8.
The news comes a couple of weeks after production on the next installment of the box office hit began, with Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson and Dwayne Johnson all returning. Mirren, who’s already established in the action genre having appeared in the RED films, joins an already incredible supporting cast including Jason Statham, Kurt Russell, Scott Eastwood and Charlize Theron.
Seasoned action director F. Gary Grey (Straight Outta Compton, A Man Apart) has taken over the reigns from Justin Lin for Fast 8, which will be set in New York and will see Dominic Toretto and family go up against a new foe in the shape of Charlize Theron. The plot is still under wraps but will likely center around the ongoing feud with Jason Statham’s character Deckard Shaw.
Nothing is yet known about the role Helen Mirren will play in Fast 8, but our guess is it could involve some homage to franchise favourite Paul Walker, who sadly passed away two years ago whilst filming the seventh installment. It would certainly be a great addition to the storyline, especially considering Mirren’s love for cars and driving in particular.
We’ll keep you up to date regarding the plot details as soon as they’re released – Fast 8 is scheduled to hits cinemas worldwide from 14 April 2017.
