Well this is an unexpected turn of events – it’s less than six months until Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is due to hit cinemas the world over, but the spin-off blockbuster seems to have run into some alarming issues.
For reasons unknown, director Gareth Edwards, who’s behind the helm for the Star Wars prequel spin-off, has been recruiting help from numerous creative experts to aid in the requested reshoots ordered by Disney.
With a production of this size and budget, it’s certainly alarming to hear that over 4 weeks of reshoots are currently underway for ‘Rogue One’, but when some of Hollywood‘s top Director’s of Photography and Second Unit Directors are brought in last minute, it’s safe to say Disney are not happy with that Gareth Edwards has delivered.
It’s a massive blow for the studio giant, that’s almost become untouchable at the box office thanks to it’s billion-dollar Marvel and Star Wars franchises – but has Disney stretched itself too far with Star Wars?
With Star Wars: The Force Awakens only hitting cinemas six months ago and generating over $2 billion at the box office, perhaps it was unnecessary for Disney to rush out a spin-off when it’s next installment, Episode VIII, is due out next year.
As well as ‘Rogue One’, which takes place just before Star Wars: A New Hope, Disney is also eager to get the recently announced Han Solo based spin-off into production in order to capitalize on the characters surge in popularity again thanks to Harrison Ford’s involvement in Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
Regardless of the reasons behind the reshoots, most likely stemming from Gareth Edwards desire to tell a darker story, Disney is keen on lightening the mood of the franchise in order to appeal to the mass market.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is currently still slated for release on 16 December 2016.
