Thor was definitely one of Marvel‘s stand-out films when the franchise launched back in 2011 – especially when you consider it’s stellar cast that included screen legend and Academy Award-winning actor Anthony Hopkins.
Think though how differently the blockbuster would have been, had Thor’s father, Odin, been played by another Academy Award-winning actor who turned down the part.
Speaking recently with The Guardian about whether he’d ever been touted for a superhero film, controversial but legendary actor Mel Gibson told of how Marvel execs originally approached him about play the God of Thunder’s father, before the part was eventually offered to Anthony Hopkins.
Mel Gibson is certainly not shy when it comes to voicing his opinions, but when it comes to film, the actor/director is rarely wrong. While promoting his new film Blood Father, that sees Gibson return to leading man duties for the action-thriller, he was quick to make his thoughts on the industry clear as well as perhaps the reason why he turned down the big money part.
What Gibson is saying makes a lot of sense, especially in an industry almost overwhelmed by superhero franchises whether the studio’s name offers more pull than the leading star themselves – but then again Hollywood stars like Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Downey Jr and Dwayne Johnson have all proved that an actors name still carries a lot of weight at the box office.
who knows, maybe we’ll still see Mel Gibson in a superhero blockbuster one day – especially as the actor tries to revive his once untouchable career.
