It’s one of the biggest franchises in movie history so it’s no surprise that when Disney decided to continue the epic saga, millions of fans clambered to book tickets – especially after learning that original cast members Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher would be reprising their roles after almost 30 years.
So with Star Wars: The Force Awakens generating almost $2 billion at the global box office, Disney know they’ve got their work cut out making the next installment even better – at least as well as can be now that they’ve killed of one of the most beloved characters in the Star Wars universe.
Recent franchise newcomer John Boyega, who plays exiled Stormtrooper Finn, has promised that Episode VIII will be even bigger than it’s predecessor. Speaking exclusively to Variety at this year’s Cannes Film Festival, where the actor is promoting his new film The Circle, Boyega was quick to praise the work of new director Rian Johnson, who’ve taken over from J.J. Abrams.
During the interview, Boyega also tried in vain to deflect questions about his character Finn’s relationship with Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, and the potential direction the character could take in the next installment, considering he was left in a coma at the end of The Force Awakens.
Somehow I doubt be actor would be allowed to make such bold statements unless Disney was assured the film could live up to it. But only time will tell as Star Wars: Episode VIII hits cinemas worldwide on 15 December 2017.
