Space Jam 2 Criticised By Original Director

The original Space Jam film is widely regarded as a family classic, loved by countless generations of kids and adults – so it’s completely acceptable that original director Joe Pytka would be against a sequel that will never surpass it’s predecessor.

We recently reported that NBA star LeBron James had been confirmed for the sequel that would be directed by Fast & Furious director Justin Lin – but it seems Pytka is so against a sequel to his 1996 hit that he’s flat out asked studio execs not to make it;

Don’t do it. It’s doomed. Michael Jordan was the biggest star on the planet. When we did Space Jam, there was a perfect storm of players and ex-players available — Larry Bird, Charles Barkley, Patrick Ewing. They all had a persona that complemented the film. There are none around like that now.Joe Pytka

It’s very rare that sequels work out well, especially after 20 years, so you can understand people’s reservations surrounding the in-development sequel – but this latest public opinion is unlikely to change Twentieth Century Fox‘s plans.

Space Jam took in over $300 million worldwide when it hit cinemas back in 1996 thanks in part to a whole host of NBA sports stars including Michael Jordan, Larry Bird and Charles Barkley.
